If a Companion is currently Main, they get four equipment slots, while if they're Secondary they only contribute one slot.
You get three companions over the course of the game, with one filling the role of Main Companion and the other two (When you've got more than one one) filling the role of Secondary Companions. The Companion system has been overhauled yet again for Dark Side, and it's by far my favorite attempt in the series, a clever mixture of Warriors of the North's plot-mandated Valkyries with main and secondary bonuses and the first two games Companions-as-gear-carriers.
